Meeting Faqs
Frequently asked questions
If you are unsure about AA or visiting a meeting, these answers may help. You are welcome to ask us anything else.
Will anyone know I have contacted AA?
Your enquiry is treated discreetly. AA members respect anonymity, and you do not have to give your full name to ask for help.
Do I have to pay to attend a meeting?
No. AA has no membership fees or dues. Meetings may pass a collection to cover their costs, but contributing is entirely voluntary.
Do I need a referral to join AA?
No referral is needed. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.
Can I come if I am not sure I am an alcoholic?
Yes. If you are worried about your drinking, you can contact us or visit an open meeting to find out more. Closed meetings are for people who have a desire to stop drinking.
What happens when I contact Thames Valley Intergroup?
Tell us what you need, whether that is a local meeting or a question about AA. We will do our best to point you towards appropriate help without judgement.
What should I expect at my first meeting?
You can expect a welcome from people who understand problems with drinking. Members share their own experiences; you can simply listen if you prefer.
Will I be asked to speak?
No. You may be invited to introduce yourself, but you do not have to share your story or answer questions.
Can I bring someone with me?
Friends and family can attend meetings listed as open. Closed meetings are for people who have a desire to stop drinking, so check the meeting listing before you go.
What if I cannot get to a meeting in person?
Online and telephone meetings may be an option. Contact us if you would like help finding one that suits you.
